Despite wide-scale protest, Rex Tillerson’s nomination as Secretary of State was supported by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on a vote of 11-10 (All the Republicans voted for Tillerson and all the Democrats voted against him.) The vote must still come to the Senate floor, which is scheduled to happen early next week. The Senate Judiciary Committee is voting this morning on whether to support the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.

***Since both of these votes are expected to come to the Senate floor soon, now is the time to put pressure on your senators and urge them to vote NO on these appointments. Please also share this action widely with anyone you know who is represented by a Republican senator. ****

If your senator is a member of one of the committees below, please ask them how they voted and either thank them for their vote against Tillerson/Sessions or express dismay that they voted to move the nomination to the Senate floor.

Here is a list of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Judiciary Committee members:

Script:

Hi, my name is _____ and I’m calling from _____. I’m calling to urge Senator _____ to vote against confirming Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and Jeff Sessions as Attorney General, as I understand that these two confirmations will come to the Senate floor soon. I’m appalled that the nominations for Sessions and Tillerson were not blocked in committee as the hearings made it clear that neither are fit to serve. Tillerson is too closely aligned with Russia and his past position as CEO of Exxon/Mobil leaves him liable for many conflicts of interest. And Sessions’ well documented history of racist views as well as his appalling voting record against civil rights and voting rights mean we cannot trust that he would fairly enforce our nation’s laws. I urge Senator _____ to do everything in his/her power to block these nominations and speak out publicly against these nominees.

The minute Donald Trump took the oath of office, he risked violation of the emoluments clause of the constitution. Meanwhile, the ACLU has invoked the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to request DT’s financial and other business records pertaining to possible conflicts of interest.

Here’s What You Can Do:

  • Call your Senators and your Congressional Rep.
  • Call the Government Oversight Committee. 202-225-5074. Ask them to conduct an investigation.
  • Donate to the ACLU, who has taken legal action to request Trump’s financial and other business records as part of a 7-point plan to take action against the Trump administration.
  • Script for Senators/Congressperson:
Hi, my name is _____ and I’m calling from _____. I would to urge Senator/Congressperson _____ to call for a full investigation into the President’s potential conflicts of interest. He has not adequately separated himself from his business as he still maintains ownership and an income stream. The GSA needs to terminate the Trump Hotel post office lease in order to make sure that he does not personally profit from foreign dignitaries here on official business. This is is just one of the many ways he may be in violation of the Constitution.

    Script for Government Oversight Committee:
Hi, my name is _____ and I’m calling from _____. I’m calling to ask the Government Oversight Committee to conduct a full investigation into the President’s potential conflicts of interest. He has not adequately separated himself from his business as he still maintains ownership and an income stream. The GSA needs to terminate the Trump Hotel post office lease in order to make sure that he does not personally profit from foreign dignitaries here on official business. This issue has not been resolved, despite the President’s promise at his press conference. Rather than wasting time and money investigating Clinton’s emails you should focus on our President who is violating the Constitution.
